Planning your stay? Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about getting to Heron Island, what to expect during your visit, and how to make the most of your time on the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

Getting Here

How do you get to Heron Island?

Heron Island is located around 72km off the coast of Gladstone on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Most guests travel to Gladstone first, then transfer to the island by boat or helicopter.


How long does it take to get to Heron Island?

Travel time usually includes a flight or drive to Gladstone, followed by an island transfer. The boat transfer takes around two hours, while the helicopter transfer takes about 30 minutes.


Can you snorkel straight from the beach on Heron Island?

Yes. Heron Island is known for excellent shore-based snorkelling, with easy access to the reef directly from the beach. Conditions are generally best within two hours either side of high tide.


Reef, Wildlife and Seasonal Experiences

What is the best time to visit Heron Island?

Heron Island is a year-round destination. May to October typically offers excellent conditions for snorkelling and diving, while November to March is ideal for seasonal wildlife experiences such as turtle nesting and hatching.


When is turtle season on Heron Island?

Turtle season on Heron Island generally runs from November to April. Green and loggerhead turtles nest from November to March, and hatchlings are most often seen from January to April.


Are there stingers at Heron Island?

Dangerous marine stingers are not typically a concern around Heron Island. In warmer months, mild or nuisance stingers may occasionally be present, but conditions are generally suitable for swimming and snorkelling.


Do you need a wetsuit to snorkel at Heron Island?

A wetsuit is optional and depends on the season. In winter, when water temperatures can drop to around 18°C, many guests choose to wear one for comfort. In summer, a wetsuit is usually not necessary.


Is Heron Island suitable for families?

Yes. Heron Island is well suited to families, with safe shore-based snorkelling, guided walks and nature-based experiences. Family-friendly programs may also be available during school holidays.


What is included in a stay on Heron Island?

Included in your accommodation rate are complimentary guided island activities and snorkel equipment hire, while extras such as diving and spa treatments are available at an additional cost.


Is there WiFi and mobile reception on Heron Island?

Mobile phone coverage is not available on Heron Island. Paid WiFi is available in selected public areas, including reception, the restaurant and the bar.


Why is Heron Island unique?

Heron Island is unique for its location directly on the reef, allowing guests to snorkel straight from the beach. It is also one of Australia’s most significant turtle nesting locations and offers a quieter reef experience than many larger destinations.


Dining, Diving and Practical Information

Can dietary requirements be catered for?

Yes. Vegetarian, gluten-free and other dietary requirements can usually be accommodated. We recommend advising the island of any allergies or special dietary needs before arrival.


Can you complete a PADI course on Heron Island?

Yes. Heron Island offers PADI-certified courses for eligible guests. Some courses may require medical clearance, and students are encouraged to complete the theory component online before arrival. For availability and course information, please contact the dive team at dive@heronisland.com.


Are there restrictions on flying after diving?

Yes. For safety reasons, you should avoid flying within 24 hours of scuba diving. This applies to all onward flights and helicopter transfers after diving.


Are there any other diving restrictions?

Yes. Some medical conditions and prescription medications may affect your ability to dive. If this applies to you, please contact the Marine Centre in advance for advice at dive@heronisland.com.


Are Mutton Birds noisy?

Mutton Birds can be noisy during their breeding season, particularly in November, December and January. If you are sensitive to noise, earplugs are available from the boutique.


Do guests receive a room key at check-in?

No. Heron Island is a keyless property, so guests do not need to carry a room key while enjoying the island. Rooms can be locked from inside, and a safe is available at reception if required.


Can guests fly drones on Heron Island?

Drone use on and around Heron Island is restricted due to helicopter operations and the island’s protected bird habitat.

If you wish to operate a drone, you must meet all relevant aviation and environmental permit requirements before arrival.

Guests with the required permits must notify reception before operating a drone and follow any daily safety instructions relating to helicopter movements.
